JOHANNESBURG - A South American woman has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine worth over R2 million into OR Tambo International Airport.

On Monday the woman was searched while preparing to board a connecting flight from Sao Paulo to Maputo.

The suspect reportedly hid 10 kilograms of cocaine in ten handbags concealed in her luggage.

South African Revenue Service (Sars) officials said they have seen an increase in the handbag smuggling modus operandi that allows drug mules to carry large quantities of narcotics.

Sars spokesperson Luther Lebelo said, "The handbag seemed to be the quickest way to carry large quantities. This is an increasing trend."
