How happy are our children?
Doctor Shazly Savahl from the UWC’s Psychology Dept discusses how SA children are happiest when at school & with their friends, but face serious challenges at home.
CAPE TOWN - According to the 2015 Misery Index by Bloomberg, South Africa ranked as the third most miserable country in the world, with only Argentina and Venezuela worse off.
But in a different study of children South Africa isn't too bad.
53,000 children between the ages of eight and 12 in 15 countries took part in an international study which has been ongoing for the past three years, with the University of the Western Cape (UWC) conducting the survey amongst children in South Africa from different backgrounds.
In spite of the country's many challenges, our children are happiest when at school and with their friends but home life is more challenging as many come from dangerous neighbourhoods and also have more family responsibilities.
