Soweto crackdown: Alleged truck hijacking gang nabbed

Police say the men have been positively linked to a syndicate that has been terrorising the community.

JOHANNESBURG - Five suspected hijackers have been arrested in Soweto in a crackdown on gangs targeting delivery vans to shopping malls in Johannesburg.

Another suspect shot himself in the head as authorities tried to arrest him.

The operation by the Crime Intelligence, Vehicle Theft and Canine Units started at 3am this morning at the Jabulani Hostel and flats.

Authorities say the men have been positively linked to a syndicate that has been terrorising the community.

Police spokesman Captain Mpande Khoza says, "The operation started at 3am this morning by Crime Intelligence and the VIS Unit of Soweto where they've been tracing the suspects who have been terrorising the community with hijackings of these delivery vans of many companies."
