#PrisonBreak: Manhunt continues for escaped convicts
The hardened criminals are believed to have escaped through a window at Groenpunt Maximum Security Prison.
JOHANNESBURG - The search continues for six hardened criminals who escaped from the Groenpunt Maximum Security Prison in Vereeniging and authorities have appealed to the public to help them find the fugitives.
The men are believed to have escaped through a window in the early hours of Thursday morning.
One of them has since been rearrested.
The men have been deemed extremely dangerous and officials say they may be armed.
Correctional Services Department spokesperson Logan Maistry said, "Correctional service officials together with police and other law enforcement agencies are working around the clock to ensure that the remaining six inmates are arrested. We're appealing to members of the public not to interact or engage with these offenders should they come into contact with them."
Maistry said the crimes committed by the escaped prisoners include robbery, rape, attempted murder, burglary and kidnapping.
Acting National Correctional Services Commissioner Zacharia Modise on Thursday said the prisoners posed a threat to surrounding communities.
The department dispatched its officials to the facility to determine how the inmates managed to escape.
