JOHANNESBURG - The Correctional Services Department is trying to determine the exact circumstances concerning the escape of seven inmates at the Groenpunt Maximum Security Prison.

The prisoners escaped through a broken window yesterday morning.

Five of the seven inmates have been re-arrested while police continue to search for the other two men.

The men were convicted of crimes including burglary, rape, and attempted murder and are considered extremely dangerous.

The Department's Logan Maistry said, "We have conducted a full scale investigation into this escape, looking into all possibilities, no possibility has been ruled out."

He said the men who were re-arrested are under heavy guard.

"We've already incarcerated them back in a correctional centre. Obviously we won't divulge where at this stage."

Maistry said the search continues for the remaining two suspects.

"With this kind of commitment and dedication we are confident that the remaining inmates will also be arrested shortly."

Meanwhile, security at the prison has been increased.

"Security at correctional centres is something that we look at on a regular basis because it's a dynamic issue," said Maistry.

He said the department has a good record in stopping prison escapes.

"South Africa only had a 0,024 percent escape rate."
