CANNES - A new initiative has been launched at this year's Cannes Film Festival to help boost South African filmmakers.

A delegation of South Africans is attending this year's festival and taking part in the market which takes place alongside it.

The Cannes South African Film Factory will provide the chance for four local directors and four international directors to collectively produce four short films that will have a greater likelihood of screening at the official Cannes programme next year.

The country doesn't have anything in official selection this year, but the National Film and Video Foundation hopes this initiative will help change that in the future.
