Burundi arrests army generals who led failed coup bid
President Pierre Nkurunziza has returned to Bujumbura after a coup mounted against him failed.
BUJUMBURA - The army generals who led a rebellion in Burundi have been arrested.
They've admitted the coup mounted against President Pierre Nkurunziza while he was attending a summit in Tanzania, has failed.
Major General Godefroid Niyombare is among the mutineers arrested.
He told reporters as soldiers approached, that they decided to surrender because the coup had failed.
Most of the military support President Nkurunziza.
Niyombare said he hoped the plotters won't be killed.
Nkurunziza yesterday said he would forgive the soldiers who surrendered.
Bujumbura is quiet this morning, with most residents staying indoors after
a day of fighting between soldiers for and against Nkurunziza.
