JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have confirmed the owner of a daycare centre has been arrested in connection with the rape of an 11-year-old girl in Cresta.

On Monday Eyewitness News revealed the man was released from custody without any explanation from authorities, prompting outrage from the child's family.

It's understood the attack happened last month at the suspect's home where he runs a daycare.

The police's Katlego Maogale says the man was arrested last night at his home in Cresta in northern Johannesburg.

"He appeared in court today and the case is continuing."

It's alleged the man raped the little girl on her birthday last month after he'd asked her mother if the child could come to his home to play with his own children.

It's alleged the suspect locked the young girl in a toilet before tying up both her hands and feet.

Police say the suspect will be back in court soon facing rape charges.
