Suspect who allegedly caused Swellendam crash to remain in custody

CAPE TOWN - A 34-year-old man, who was arrested following a deadly crash on the N2 near Swellendam, will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

Eight correctional services officials died when their vehicle collided with a truck and a bakkie last week.

The police's Bernadine Steyn said, "The 34-year-old accused appeared in the Swellendam Magistrates Court on a charge of culpable homicide. The case was postponed to 22 May."

Last week, correctional services support staff were deployed to the Buffeljagsrivier Correctional Centre in Swellendam after the eight officials died.
