JOHANNESBURG - The ANC in Gauteng says the prolonged power outage in Soweto by Eskom will sabotage the party's campaign ahead of the 2016 local elections.

On Friday residents were left without electricity for at least ten hours.

The power cuts continued in some areas until yesterday.

Eskom says Soweto residents owe the utility billions of rand in debt.

Last week locals in Orlando West protested against the installation of pre-paid electricity meters.

The ANC's Jolidee Matongo says while the party acknowledges the debt the power cuts portray the party in a negative light to potential voters.

"We are just a few months away from local government elections and when you switch off power for more than 10 hours, what does it say to ordinary people? They are saying the ANC can't govern, they can't provide electricity."
