CAPE TOWN - A Stellenbosch University student claims he received a verbal threat against his family from a lecturer who had allegedly racially attacked him via SMS.

The 'Open Stellenbosch' campaign was created last month to tackle issues of transformation at the institution.

Open Stellenbosch spokesperson Sikhulile Duma lodged a complaint over an apparent racist SMS he received from nuclear physics lecturer Anton Stander.

Weekend reports said Stander sent an SMS to sociology student and 'Open Stellenbosch' forum's Duma reading, "Jou swart moer van die wit boer".

Loosely transcribed, the message means: "You black bastard from a white farmer," according to the City Press.

Duma then traced the anonymous SMS using Facebook.

Stander has since been suspended, pending an investigation.

Duma says since the creation of 'Open Stellenbosch' its members have been victimised.

Duma claims the lecturer also left a threatening voice message from a private number.

"Basically it said, 'I am looking for a person, and then he stated my father's address' and then he dropped the phone."

Duma says his father lives abroad and is concerned about the recent racial attacks.

He adds his family is considering legal action.
