Image of Zuma 'hitting a man' misconstrued
The president was not beating a man but rather taking part in a traditional ceremony.
JOHANNESBURG - An image making the rounds on social media, reportedly showing President Jacob Zuma hitting a man, has revealed to not be an act of violence but rather part of a traditional ceremony.
The image was actually taken at Zuma's Nkandla homestead in Kwazulu Natal, with the president pretending to beat a man as part of a traditional scuffle, known as 'Ukungcweka', a traditional way for males to pretend to be fighting. The unidentified man plays along with the president's lark.
However, many have misconstrued the image, saying the president was hitting a foreign national to show disdain for foreigners in South Africa.
To make matters worse, this picture is probably a year or two old, making the claim that Zuma was hitting this man incorrect.
The event took place in full view of scores of relatives and locals who attended ceremony and you can see some even chuckling at the back.
