JOHANNESBURG - Sparks have flown during a fiery debate on Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant's budget vote speech in Parliament with MPs unleashing personal attacks on one another.

The gloves came off when the chairperson of Parliament's labour committee, Lumka Yengeni called the Democratic Alliance (DA) a 'lily white party desperate for so called black leaders'.

Yengeni used the latter part of her speech to lash the DA.

"It is very much the representative of Cecil John Rhodes."

DA MP Mike Waters challenged the relevance of her comments and the spat quickly became personal.

"The personal life and personal issues of Honourable Yengeni are not for this house."

The hapless house chairperson, who had to raise her voice to be heard over shouting MPs, was accused of showing bias for not immediately reining in Yengeni.
