Parks Tau to deliver State of the City address today
The Johannesburg mayor is expected to focus on issues of service delivery & billing problems.
JOHANNESBURG - Billing problems and other service delivery issues are expected to be some of the key issues addressed during today's State of the City Address.
Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau will be addressing residents in Braamfontein this morning about the progress made and challenges for the city.
Johannesburg received its first unqualified audit in recent years, and has promised to maintain this momentum.
However, various challenges still remain, including billing, roads and power.
Tau will be talking about the progress Johannesburg has made and which direction the city is headed.
The State of the City Address will focus on the theme 'turning challenges into opportunities' and highlighting major programmes under the Growth and Development Strategy for 2040.
But the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s Vasco da Gama says billing issues remain a major problem.
"We received a collection rate of about 80 percent, down from about 93 percent. It's R200,000 per month less that they are collecting than they should. You can imagine what could have been done with that."
And Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)'s Regional Secretary, Silumko Mabona, says not much has been done to implement change.
"The challenges that have been there have been there for the past 21 years."
Johannesburg's roads, traffic problems, electricity and billing issues also remain key challenges.
