JOHANNESBURG - A planned rodeo in Wolmaransstad, in the North West, has been cancelled after a court intervention by the farm animal protection unit of the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA).

Evidence from previous rodeos was presented to demonstrate the cruelty of this activity, which exploits animals and has resulted in injuries and death.

Some personnel from the NSPCA made representation at a formal hearing on 24 April before the Maquassie Hills Magistrates Court.

The Magistrate, after hearing the matter, ruled that the application be dismissed and this meant that no rodeo could take place on 25 April or in the future in Wolmaransstad.

The NSPCA says that during the proceedings, the tyres of its vehicles as well as the Klerksdorp SPCA were slashed and criminal charges laid.
