Correctional services staff traumatised following N2 crash

CAPE TOWN - Correctional services support staff were on Tuesday deployed to the Buffeljagsrivier Correctional Centre in Swellendam after eight officials died in a road accident earlier in the day.

A correctional services minibus was involved in a crash with a bakkie and a truck on the N2 near Swellendam.

One official was critically wounded in the crash which happened while they were on their way to work.

Correctional services' Delekile Klaas said his department would do everything in its power to assist traumatised staff at the Buffeljagsrivier Correctional Centre.

"We have sent members from the emergency management team, other chaplains for psychology and employee assistance programme officers and additional nurses."

Klaas said the news had left him devastated.

"Emotionally, it has left a wound that is very deep. It's a loss that we never expected."

Officials are investigating the cause of the fatal crash.

The crash happened shortly after 7am.
