8 die in N2 crash near Swellendam

A bakkie, truck and a vehicle from correctional services were involved in the collision.

CAPE TOWN - Metro Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has confirmed eight people have died in a collision on the N2 highway near Swellendam on Tuesday.

The crash happened shortly after 7am.

Metro EMS spokesperson Robert Daniels said, "Two others are critically injured and the third remains trapped inside the wreckage and eight people were fortunate enough to walk away with only minor injuries."

Meanwhile, Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa explained what had happened.

"Currently we have got a situation on the N2 about 4km out of Swellendam where three vehicles were involved in an accident, it was a bakkie, a truck and a vehicle from correctional services."

Africa said the deceased were travelling in the correctional services vehicle.

The road has since been reopened to traffic.
