They're expected to play a significant part in the upbringing of the little princess as they have done with their brother Prince George.
They were followed by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall who arrived shortly afterwards.
The queen, who is staying at Sandringham, her country estate, 200 kilometres out of London will not visit today.
It's thought it's likely she'll meet her fifth great grandchild for the first time when the Cambridges retreat to Anmer Hall their country home tomorrow.
It may be that Prince William uses that meeting in line with protocol to seek the queen's approval for names he may have shortlisted.
The birth has also provided a boon to the country's bookmakers who having first offered odds on the child's likely gender, now turn their attention to names, with Charlotte, Alice, Victoria and Elizabeth the current favorites.
Dozens of Britons are gathered outside the St Mary's hospital in London this afternoon hoping to catch a glimpse of the latest addition to the royal family.
At the same time, Twitter is abuzz with commentary over the Duchess's remarkable recovery only hours after the birth.
The Royal Baby was born yesterday at eight pounds. And she's already lost two!

Kate Middleton makes me feel inept. Found a prince, fairytale wedding, popped out two perfect children + came out in heels 10hrs after birth

How was Kate Middleton walking around (and looking PERFECT) 10 hrs after giving birth?!? I couldn't walk & looked like a mental patient.
