JOHANNESBURG - Eskom will implement stage one loadshedding this hour.

The utility says it's had to implement power cuts this afternoon due to a lack of generating capacity - as it carries out maintenance on a number of its units.

Spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe says load shedding will continue until 10 o'clock this evening.

"We are urging customers where possible, especially those using heaters, to delay the use if possible, or if possible at all to use gas heaters. But we are basically severely strained at this stage which is why we have to implement stage one of load shedding."

On Friday Eskom said there was no plan to implement load shedding as extensive maintenance work would continue over the next three days.

Eskom on Wednesday said although certain areas will be without electricity for a certain period, about 96 percent of South Africans will still continue to receive power supply at the same time.
