JOHANNESBURG - The Emirates Lions 5 game winning streak was brought to an end at Loftus Versfeld as the Bulls beat the Joburg side 35-33 last night in a very tight encounter.
The Bulls were out of the starting blocks at lightning speed as they ran in 2 quick tries through scrum half Piet van Zyl to take a 12-0 lead early in the game.
Faf de Klerk grabbed the Lions' first try, while Elton Jantjies tried keeping them in the game with the boot.
A 3rd try from JJ Engelbrecht, coming from a superb run from the half way line, helped the home side stretch their lead significantly, as they took a well deserved 25-13 advantage into the half time break.
Johan Ackerman's side came back strongly in the second half with 2 penalties from Jantjies and a try from Jaques van Rooyen.
One more 5 pointer from Pierre Spies took the game away from the Lions, despite Jaco Kriel dotting over the line for the visitors.
The Bulls now top the South African conference thanks to the Stromers loss to the Cheetahs.
