CAPE TOWN - Ottery residents on Thursday said they live in fear of being caught in the crossfire of gang violence.

Rival gangs were involved in a firefight near a local high school on Wednesday.

The violence is believed to have flared up following a long-standing battled for territory.

The Community Policing Forum's chairperson Faldie Bassardien said, "The people are scared for their lives in terms of gang violence, which is flaring up between the Mongrels and the Euro Cats. It's actually a very stressful situation to be living under at this point in time because you never know when you can be hit by stray bullets."
