CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Social Development Department said it has seen an increase in child abandonment cases over the past year.

The department is dealing with a number of cases where children have been abandoned or neglected.

One such case includes that of a 17-month-old boy who was left on the doorstep of a Steenberg house earlier this year.

The baby remains in the care of social workers.

MEC Albert Fritz said this is one of many cases.

"Over the last year we had a number of cases where babies were abandoned and in some instances police actually did make some arrests and parents who were responsible were held accountable."
