JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police say two of the nine suspects allegedly involved in an armed robbery at a cellphone shop in Heidelberg on Friday have been linked to the killing of a police officer at Park Station.

The constable was shot while responding to a robbery last month.

He was shot several times, died on the scene and had his firearm stolen.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini says community members to work with the police in putting these criminals behind bars.

"We are calling upon the members of the community to give criminal a hard time, especially those gangs who are brandishing high caliber firearms. Any information that may lead to the discovery of these firearms including assault rifles and shotguns will be rewarded."

The slain Gauteng public policing head David Makhubela's death raised the number of police officers killed by criminals in Gauteng alone.

In March, Constables Mthokozisi Myezi and Casey Mafokoane were shot dead after stopping a vehicle near the Modderfontein off-ramp.

In the same month, another officer was shot and killed in Erasmia, south-west of Pretoria, while responding to a house robbery also.

In February, a former police officer was shot and killed by three intruders at his Linden home.

Police said 55-year-old Andre Fabricius was shot while inspecting a noise at around 3am.

His wife and 13-year-old son were already tied up by the armed suspects.

Police said after killing the former officer, the gunmen stole laptops and cellphones.
