Firefighters battle to extinguish Bainskloof blaze
Crews have been working through the night to contain the runaway veld fire.
CAPE TOWN - Firefighters are still battling a blaze between Wellington and Ceres in the Western Cape.
Crews have been working through the night to contain the runaway veld fire that broke out on a Bainskloof hiking trail five days ago.
Close to two hundred firefighters have been deployed to the area.
Working on Fire spokesperson Linton Rensburg says they have teams from the local district municipalities assisting.
"The priority is to ensure that the various fires are contained, that there is no further spread of this particular fire."
Firefighters say they've had to deal with at least 15 vegetation fires in the province since the beginning of this week.
"This is obviously a major concern for us right now, normally the fire season would have come to an end at the end of March but it looks likely to be extended."
This week two firefighters Darrel Rea and Jastun Visagie were killed when their helicopter crashed while assisting in efforts to extinguish the blaze.
