Cope calls on Zuma to act against Cele
Cope has lashed out at Bheki Cele for saying that the Saps is bleeding under Riah Phiyega’s leadership.
JOHANNESBURG - In the latest reaction to Former National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele's comments about current National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega, the Congress of the People (Cope) says if President Jacob Zuma does not reign in, he condones rogue behaviour in Parliament.
Earlier this week, the former police commissioner told Eyewitness News that the South African Police Services is bleeding under Phiyega's leadership.
Cele left the position after a public protector finding that he had behaved improperly in a massive police headquarters leasing deal before he became deputy agriculture minister.
He argued Phiyega is wrong to claim that she inherited gigantic problems when she took over the service.
Cele said the current crime statistics speak for themselves.
Cope has called on Zuma to take action against him.
The party's Dennis Bloem said, "Cele has done a scandalous thing towards the current police commissioner. We are calling on the president to take firm action against Cele." LISTEN: SAPS bleeding under Phiyega.
