President of newly formed metalworkers union dies in crash

Cosatu has confirmed Sifiso Maphumulo was involved in a fatal car crash this morning.

JOHANNESBURG - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has confirmed that the president of its newly affiliated metalworkers union, the Liberated Metalworkers Union of South Africa (Limusa), has been killed in a car accident.

Sifiso Maphumulo died overnight.

Limusa was admitted into the Cosatu fold last month after the ousting of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) earlier this year.

Cosatu's Norman Mampane says, "Cosatu has received the saddest news of the passing of the Limusa president in a car accident. We will be keeping in touch with the family in order to confirm all the details."
