South Africans turn to Twitter to condemn xenophobic attacks
Twitter users took the platform to register their shock and dismay at the current xenophobic violence.
JOHANNESBURG - The recent spate of violence perpetrated against foreign nationals has given rise to the hashtags #saynotoxenophobia, #xenophobiamustfall and #notinmyname, to serve as condemnations of the attacks being perpetrated in the country.
The recent spate of xenophobic violence in Johannesburg and Durban has had social media users venting their frustrations, anger and disgust on their respective platforms.
National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega, earlier announced more than 800 officers had been deployed to various parts of KwaZulu-Natal to quell what the African National Congress (ANC) described as "a shameful assault on Africa's humanity".
Several areas including KwaMashu and Umlazi have been affected by looting and violence in recent days and the unrest spread to the heart of Durban on Tuesday.
The attacks have so far claimed five lives.
