JOHANNESBURG - The Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) will be officially launched in Ga-Rankuwa on Tuesday.

The Higher Education Department said the new specialised institution is a milestone for medical education in the country.

Academics, government officials and students gathered at the new university which will merge with the Medical University of Southern Africa (Medunsa) following its demerger from the University of Limpopo.

Government said it launched the new specialised institution to address the shortage of medical professionals in the country.

President Jacob Zuma has arrived for the official opening of the institution.
