Move to the City of Gold if you want to earn the big bucks
A career website’s managing director says Gauteng salaries are up to 30 percent higher than in CT & KZN.
JOHANNESBURG - As a salary earner, should you live in on the coast, either in the Western Cape or KwaZulu-Natal? Or should you live in Gauteng?
While most of us have speculated about what the answer may be, we now have some proof.
According to Managing Director at CareerJunction, Paul Byrne, workers, especially highly-skilled professionals, earn more in Johannesburg and Pretoria than anywhere else in South Africa.
Comparisons made between job titles as well as job levels, revealed that on average, if you want to earn the big bucks, you need to be living inland.
Byrne said, "Without a doubt, across the 10 sectors that we've looked at, eight of those sectors will tell us that Johannesburg - or Gauteng in particular - would be the far better place to live."
He said Gauteng salaries were up to 30 percent higher than those of the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
"That's the regional difference of a salary per person within a job that is in Gauteng versus that same job in the Western Cape. The person in Gauteng would be the one earning up to 30 percent more."
The statistics are based on advertised salaries on the CareerJunction website, were taken from 160,000 jobs advertised over a period of six months.
Byrne however said there were industries where salaries were level across the country.
"That depends on the job title and occupation within that industry."
He also said there were sectors that did better and where people earned more in the Western Cape.
"Actually, in the Information Technology sector, you'll earn more in Cape Town."
Byrne said the same applied to design, media and arts.
The key sectors in Gauteng were finance or engineering.
