JOHANNESBURG -The Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF's) provincial branch on Monday confirmed one person had died during an attempted land invasion in Ballito.

Residents were reportedly marking out plots and waiting in line to collect forms from EFF members to lay claim to a plot of land when police moved in to disperse the crowd.

The EFF's Jackie Shandu said while they were trying to grab land next to the freeway someone was hit by a car and died.

Earlier this year the EFF said its members would not stop illegally occupying land in the Free State.

Four regional party leaders appeared in the Sasolburg Magistrates Court in the Free State after allegedly trespassing and illegally occupying a piece of farmland in Zamdela.
