CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Social Development Department says its increasing wages for social workers employed at department funded NGOs by up to 40 percent.

The department says this is part of efforts to stabilise the sector.

It's also made available more than 400 bursaries for students who want to pursue a social work qualification.

The department's Albert Fritz says, "The reason why we were asked to close the gap between the salaries social workers are earning in the state and those social workers within the NGO sector. People within the NGO sector and the social workers are doing brilliant work and because of the salary."
