JOHANNESBURG - The Home Affairs Department say its confident system upgrades being carried out at its offices will be completed by the start of the working week.

Home Affairs offices across the country were closed this weekend for upgrades to the department's smart ID card system.

The department's Mayihlome Tshwete says the changes are aimed at improving among other things their biometric data capturing system.

"We will allow for you to take manual pictures when you need to, specifically with children. Another improvement is being able to capture people who don't have metric details. This might be somebody who is handicapped; we are now able to give them a pin number."
