CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town Metropolitan Police Department officers have had their hands full over the Easter weekend.
They've arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving including a police officer.
Metro police, along with the South African Police Services (Saps) and provincial traffic officials stepped up patrols and road blocks over the long weekend in a bid to reduce accidents.
A Saps detective was arrested in Kuilsriver over the weekend for driving under the influence.
He was nabbed after crashing his car into a law enforcement vehicle.
In Nyanga, officials arrested 11 motorists who were also found to be drunk behind the wheel.
And six suspects were arrested in Atlantis and Mamre when officers found dagga, tik and mandrax in their possession.
At least 23 people lost their lives on the province's roads over the long weekend.
