JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have confirmed that the senior police officer killed near Turffontein south of Johannesburg is Colonel David Makhubela.

Police say the 55-year-old was stabbed to death on his way home last night.

There is still no information around the motive for the killing.

The police's Noxolo Kweza says, "This member has been with the police for 34 years and the provincial commission of Gauteng indicated that no stone would remain unturned in order to find and arrest these suspects. We are investigating a case of murder; additional charges may be laid at a later stage."

Makhubela's death brings to three the number of police officers killed by criminals in Gauteng alone in the last week.
