CAPE TOWN - Eyewitness News (EWN) has learnt the University of Cape Town is considering a proposal to move the statue of Cecil John Rhodes to Johannesburg.
The university has already voted in favour of removing the statue following protests by students.
The sculpture is currently housed in a wooden box until transportation details are finalised.
The debate about the relevance of such pieces, and the level of campus transformation, has since spread to other provinces.
While there's no official confirmation from the university, it's understood a proposal is on the table to transport the statue to the city that is home to the goldfields, once exploited by Rhodes.
The statue will either be erected at a museum or at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown.
The suggested move has angered university students.
"The exact same thing that happened in Cape Town is going to happen here. All we are going to do is protest."
At the same time EWN is awaiting confirmation from Tshwane Municipality amid rumours of similar plans to box in the statue of Paul Kruger.
