JOHANNESBURG - With the price of petrol rising overnight, South Africans have once again been warned to monitor their spending closely and to expect further pressure on their budgets.

The petrol price has increased by R1,62 per litre and diesel by up to R1,24 cents in Gauteng.

The spike comes as increases in the cost of electricity, water and other municipal services are expected within weeks.

All this is likely to push up the price of food and transport.

The Standard Bank Group's chief economist, Goolam Ballim, says two thirds of the relief motorists felt during the plummeting petrol price has already been erased.

"I have no doubt that consumers will feel that it was nothing more than a transient episode, holiday cheer that has fast evaporated."

He says warnings about a recession are premature but the year ahead is going to be a tough one.

"I suspect it's again just elementary finance management, don't spend more than you can afford to."

Some South Africans say the increases will make it harder to make ends meet.

One man said, "The money's got to go from my pocket to the government's pocket in some way."

While a woman said, "Even if it goes up, it's to compensate all those petrol hikes."

#Petrol price cut by Rs. 0.49, but State Governments will increase tax to that extent, so, in the end who's the loser??
