Agriculture Dept agrees to farm safety plan
The Ministry and AfriForum agreed on a plan of action to help protect farmers and farming communities.
CAPE TOWN - Agriculture Minister Senzeni Zokwana and AfriForum have agreed on a five-point plan of action to help protect farmers as well as people living in farming communities.
Zokwana and the lobby group recently held a second round of talks to discuss issues regarding rural safety.
As part of the plan, the department agreed to assist the organisation in expanding its safety initiatives.
AfriForum's Ernst Roets said, "We agreed between ourselves and the minister that the scope should be broadened in this project and that other role players, including the Department of Police and Justice, should be involved so we can truly have a holistic national approach."
Earlier this year, AfriForum said it will intensify its campaign to have murder declared a priority crime.
The organisation announced that 277 verified farm attacks were recorded last year.
In the 277 farm attacks, 67 people were murdered indicating an increase in attacks and murders.
