JOHANNESBURG - Police are searching for six men who opened fire on officers and hijacked an official vehicle.

The police officers approached a truck parked on Albatross Street on Monday.

When the truck driver said he didn't have the keys to open the back door a group of men started shooting from behind the closed door with AK47's.

The police's Mac Mngomezulu said one officer was in a stable condition in hospital.

"After shooting at the police the suspect jumped into the police bakkie, drove it for 8km, then hijacked another vehicle. A case of attempted murder and hijacking has been opened."

Meanwhile, a man has been shot and left in a critical condition in the north east of Pretoria.

Paramedics responded to the shooting in Montana earlier on Monday and took the man to a nearby hospital.

It's not yet clear what led to the crime but police are investigating.

Netcare 911's Santi Steinmann said, "The 33-year-old sustained serious injuries. He was treated at the scene then taken to hospital."

Yesterday, two policemen were wounded in a shootout with a group of suspects on the Edenvale off-ramp on the N3 south.

One of the officers later died in hospital while one suspect was being attended to at the site of the exchange.
