Policeman dies after shootout on N3 south

One policeman has died following a shootout on N3 south in Johannesburg.

JOHANNESBURG - One police officer is now confirmed dead after Sunday's shootout between police and a group of suspects on the Edenvale off-ramp near the N3 south.

Two other officers and a suspect are in a critical condition in hospital.

The police's Noxolo Kweza says, "Our members were patrolling on the N3 when they saw a suspicious vehicle. They tried to stop it and the suspects shot at them. Our members returned fire and two of our members were injured and another one was killed."

The highway is still closed and severely backed up with Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) have warned motorists to stay away from the N3 south.

The police have now extended their crime scene tape across the highway just before the Modderfontein, Johannesburg turnoff on the N3 south.

This means that the highway is now backed up for kilometres. Eyewitness News can see a stream of cars backed up all the way to Marlboro.

The plan now is to turn all the cars around on the highway and make sure that everybody goes off at Marlboro Drive.

Motorists are advised to avoid the N3 south as this could take a few hours to clear.
