JOHANNESBURG - Paramedics are treating two police men in a critical condition after they were wounded in a shootout with a group of suspects on the Edenvale off-ramp on the N3 south.

Both officers have been airlifted to Milpark Hospital while one suspect is being attended to at the site of the exchange.

Investigations are underway.

The metro police's Edna Mamonyane says one of the officers was shot in the head and is in a critical condition.

The highway is still closed and severely backed up with Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) have warned motorists to stay away from the N3 south.

The police have now extended their crime scene tape across the highway just before the Modderfontein, Johannesburg turnoff on the N3 south.

This means that the highway is now backed up for kilometres. Eyewitness News can see a stream of cars backed up all the way to Marlboro.

The plan now is to turn all the cars around on the highway and make sure that everybody goes off at Marlboro Drive.

Motorists are advised to avoid the N3 south as this could take a few hours to clear.
