Justice Cameron: SA society is unjust & unequal
Edwin Cameron says SA must honour heroes such as Bram Fisher, who fought for justice during the struggle.
JOHANNESBURG - Justice Edwin Cameron says South African society is unjust, unequal, with gross discrimination and state-orchestrated violence such as the Marikana shootings.
He says the country must honour heroes such as Bram Fischer, who fought for justice during the struggle.
Struggle heroes and those who were part of the Rivonia Trial have participated in a panel discussion reflecting on Fischer's life.
Cameron says Fischer was dedicated to achieving justice and he never enriched himself.
"The personal integrity did not allow him [to enrich himself]. He lived a comfortable live in the Oaklands but he did not allow excessive personal accumulation of life."
He says Fischer also had an exceptional commitment to law.
"Right through this he saw that the apartheid law was misusing law, that there was a conception of law that lay beyond the injustices."
Cameron says the integrity of struggle heroes like Fischer gave rise to the constitution.
