JOHANNESBURG - A Port Elizabeth couple implicated in child pornography crimes have been released on bail after their arrest this week for possessing and distributing the material.

The 33-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were discovered by Belgium police who had arrested a man in Antwerp.

He was caught with child pornography which led police to further arrests in South Africa.

The police's Solomon Makgale said they'd been working closely with international authorities to track down the syndicate.

"The team is working with various international policing agencies such as the FBI. They've made a number of significant arrests, the latest one being a couple in Port Elizabeth. They have been released on bail and will appear again on 24 April."

He said cops found 124 USBs, two cameras and believed these items contained child pornography which they were distributing.

At the same time, two more South Africans were arrested in connection with child pornography crimes in recent weeks with the help of the FBI and Belgian police.

The crackdown started last month when a 37-year-old man from Plettenberg Bay was arrested when it was discovered he was distributing child porn to Belgium.

Another man from Grahamstown was also apprehended for similar crimes.
