DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department has ordered a school in Inanda to reinstate a teacher sidelined for four years, allegedly because he is gay.
Sandile Ndaba a teacher at Intshisekelo Secondary School has allegedly not taught a class at the school for close to four years even though he has reported to duty daily.
The 36-year-old claims he has faced resistance from staff at the school who say it's inappropriate for pupils to be taught by a gay man.
The Education Department says it will investigate the circumstances behind the alleged discrimination.
The department's Muzi Mahlambi says Ndaba has since resumed his teaching duties.
"Duty loads have been re-allocated to him, he is happy, he is now teaching in full force, but we will then investigate other matters."
