CAPE TOWN - The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is preparing an application for the extradition of a South African man accused of running a child pornography website which exploited American children.

The 53-year-old man from Grahamstown was granted R45,000 bail on Thursday following his arrest on Wednesday.

Police allegedly found material supporting their case whilst raiding the suspect's home.

It's believed the man is one of the leaders of an international child porn syndicate.

The police's Heila Niemand says United States authorities want the man to answer to charges in that country.

"They going to bring the application but they are still busy formalising the application to bring to the South African courts."

Niemand adds that the case is a first for local authorities.
