CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Social Development Department on Friday said a 20-year-old mother who abandoned her two-year-old son at a Philippi shopping mall is receiving counselling.

Criminal charges against the young mother who was arrested after she turned herself over to police, have been dropped.

Social Development MEC Albert Fritz says officials will help the woman.

"We're now doing everything to get her onto social grants so she can get something to sustain herself and we will to continue to give her assistance and counselling."

Meanwhile, the department is also dealing with a case where a 17-month-old boy was found abandoned in Steenberg.

The child was left on the doorstep of a house in the area this week.

Fritz says a case of child abandonment has been opened.

"The second child from Steenberg is in our care, he is at a place of safety. We will also assist the police in tracking down the mother."
