Jonkershoek fire: Stellies residents ready to evacuate
Stellies students have already been evacuated from the Coetzenburg Sport Center as a precaution.
CAPE TOWN - Some Stellenbosch residents say they're ready to evacuate their homes should a fire that's been raging in the nearby Jonkershoek valley flare up again.
The blaze erupted early this week gripping the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.
Stellenbosch University students were evacuated from the Coetzenburg Sport Center as a precaution on Wednesday.
A thick cloud of smoke covers a large part of Stellenbosch, many have complained about the smoke and the ash that can be found on cars and inside people's homes.
"I live like one kilometre from there and my car is full of ash."
Even more pressing is the possibility of the fire spreading no nearby homes.
A resident from the Brandwacht area where the fire is clearly visible says its scary to watch.
"It's scary because you have a lot of stuff to move and you can't take everything, you just have to grab whatever you can like important stuff."
The fire was contained but flared-up on Wednesday due to windy conditions.
