CAPE TOWN - Authorities on Thursday said a fire in the Jonkershoek area has been largely contained and no properties are at immediate risk.

Authorities are adamant that the fire poses no threat to residential areas at the moment.

A fire broke out on Monday afternoon in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, threatening to spread towards the greater Stellenbosch area.

Stellenbosch University students were on Wednesday evacuated from Coetzenburg Sport Center and the sports science buildings.

Cape Nature spokesman Justin Lawrence says firefighters worked throughout the night to contain the fire.

"It is still out of control in sections. The aim is to keep it from moving towards the Hottentots Holland Mountain and also to contain the line moving towards the houses in the Helderberg basin. There is still no threat to life or property and no need for evacuations."

He says firefighters are currently battling two hotspots in the Blaauwklippen and Banhoek side of the Stellenbosch Mountains.

At the same time, the Cape Winelands fire chief says these two hotspots could prove problematic and there is a possibility of more flare-ups.

Fire crews will be monitoring the affected areas throughout the day.

Earlier on Thursday, some Stellenbosch residents said they were ready to evacuate their homes should there be more flare-ups.

A thick cloud of smoke covers a large part of Stellenbosch and many residents have complained about smoke and ash that can be found on cars and inside their homes.

One resident said, "I live one kilometre from the fire and my car is full of ash."

Another resident from the Brandwacht area told Eyewitness News it's too scary to watch the fire.

"It's scary because you have a lot of stuff to move and you can't take everything, you just have to grab whatever you can like important stuff."
