CAPE TOWN - The father of murdered honeymoon bride, Anni Dewani, is recovering in hospital after a freak elevator accident.

His right arm was severed while he was repairing a lift in Sweden.

Vinod Hindocha, who is an engineer, was repairing a lift when a chain slipped sending the lift cage he was standing in hurtling to the ground floor.

At the time he had extended his arm out the cage, meaning it was ripped off just below the shoulder.

The 65-year-old is even reported to have told relatives he recalls seeing the limb suspended one story above him after the fell.

Surgeons at the hospital in Gothenburg spent 13 hours reattaching the limb and he's said to have recovered movement in his elbow and some warmth in his fingers.

However, it will be a year and a half before doctors will know the full extent of the damage.

The accident comes just months after Anni's husband, Shien Dewani, was acquitted of ordering her killing in Cape Town in 2010.
