FIRE CONTAINED BUT NOT FULLY EXTINGUISHED

Dozens of firefighters battling a runaway veld fire in the valley near Stellenbosch on Tuesday said the blaze was largely contained, but not fully extinguished.

The fire, which broke out high in the mountains on Monday, had already ravaged close to 700 hectares of vegetation.

As additional fire crews hastily made their way through Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, firefighters stood at the ready, high up on the mountain slopes.

Resources have been deployed from the Eastern and Southern Cape to assist with the blaze.

Last week a fire on the Southern Peninsula ravaged 5,000 hectares of vegetation and destroyed 13 homes.
