JOHANNESBURG - Anni Dewani's father Vinod Hindocha has been involved in a freak engineering accident.

The 65-year-old's right arm was severed while he was carrying out repairs on a lift in Sweden.

Hindocha was standing inside a lift cage when the chain slipped, dropping him to the ground floor.

But because his arm was extended out of the cage, it was torn off at the shoulder.

He has already spent 13 hours in surgery to have his limb reattached and surgeons say it will be 18 months before the full extent of the damage is known.

It's understood Hindocha recalls seeing the limb suspended one storey above him.

He is now recovering in hospital.

The Hindocha family made headlines in 2010 when their daughter Anni was killed in a hijackin g in Cape Town while on her honeymoon.

Her husband Shrien, suspected of being the mastermind behind her killing, stood trial in the Western Cape High Court last year but the case against him was dropped.
